Nickelback - Dark Horse CD
Winners:
Claudette Green
Jean Graham
Fred Reardon
Shirley Rooney
Lori Humber
Nickelback are back with their sixth studio album, Dark Horse, and it’s already a top seller in North America. No doubt about it, these guys are global rock stars, kings of fist-pumping anthems, power ballads and hooks that get stuck in your head. Though they’ve let in an outside producer for this one (hitmaker Mutt Lange, ex- of Shania Twain) to wipe away some of the grunge, Nickelback don’t stray too far from their own multi-million-selling formula. If you love their version of arena rock, Dark Horse will not disappoint, filled as it is with tales of gold-digging prostitutes (“Something in Your Mouth”), booze-fuelled rampages (“Burn it to the Ground”) and the afore-mentioned balladry (“Gotta Be Somebody,” “I’d Come for You”). There’s not much in the way of subtlety – “S.E.X.,” “Just to Get High” – but then, who turns to these Alberta boys for their prose? This is raunchy, testosterone-fuelled party music. |

Serena Ryder - Is it ok?
Winners:
Greg Noble
Michelle Coady
Leonard Gibbons
Margo Rogers
Jeanette Riles
Hot off her Juno win as 2008’s new artist of the year, Toronto’s Serena Ryder recently released her third outing Is it OK? Ryder’s raspy, rootsy voice belies her 20-something years, as does her weighty songwriting, which showcases both Ryder’s tough-girl persona and startling vulnerability. Much is made of her three-octave vocal range, which takes on folk, rock, pop and alt-country stylings, backed on this CD by a full-bodied, multi-instrumental sound. This release is her first strong effort to woo listeners outside Canada’s borders, time will tell if this young Canadian songstress’ introspection will make the leap. Definitely a talent to watch. |

» The Ballad of Stompin Tom Connors CD |
Winner: Cathy Druken
The Ballad of Stompin’Tom might not scream
Christmas, but it does yell “Canada” loud and
clear. Besides, a rerecorded, updated version of “The Hockey Song” isn’t a bad way to
ease into winter. With his cowboy hat and boots, well-used guitar and songs inspired by a
lifetime of hitchhiking around and touring across this country, Stompin’Tom Connors is an
icon and a national treasure. The Ballad of
Stompin’Tom is the wandering soul’s latest CD,
and it features rerecorded versions of “The Olympic Song,” “Hockey Mom Tribute” and
the aforementioned anthemic “The Hockey Song.”There’s a good selection of new ones,
too, including “The Lady Slipper,” “My British Columbian Home,” and “Ottawa Lures” –
yarns as patriotic and evocative as ever.
